Obituary for Robert Francis "Hebe" Hebenstreit

Robert Francis Hebenstreit “Hebe”, 64
December 19, 1951 – May 7, 2016
Bloomington – Robert Hebenstreit, affectionately and widely known as Hebe, passed away Saturday evening, May 7, 2016 at University Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born December 19, 1951 in Indianapolis to William and Anna Hebenstreit.
He attended Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, and Notre Dame University before moving to Bloomington. He was employed as a bartender for over 40 years and worked at many renowned Bloomington establishments such as The Olde Regulator, Time Out, Yogis, City Grill, Nick’s and the Upstairs Pub. He co-owned the Peanut Barrel from the late 70’s to mid 80’s, a source of his many fine and entertaining stories.
His passions included golf, and he played on many of the top courses in the country. His favorite day was a round of golf and then heading to one of his favorite gathering places for beers, stories and many laughs with his best buddies. Behind his ever present sense of humor and fun was a sharp intellect. He was an avid reader and spent many hours in the library. He enjoyed classics and his favorite novel was To Kill a Mockingbird. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles, and followed many pro sports. He was a big Notre Dame and IU fan and attended numerous sporting events.
Hebe was well loved by everyone who knew him on either side of the bar, young and old. It was often said of him that he knew no enemies. It was not unusual for him to travel outside of Bloomington and run into someone who he had served a beer to, played golf with, or entertained with his vast repertoire of stories, experiences and wonderful humor. The list of people who knew and loved him is innumerable. He was truly a Bloomington legend and will never be forgotten.
Hebe is survived by his mother, Anna Hebenstreit, brother Jim Hebenstreit (Nan) and their children Tony, Jamie and Samantha, brother Dave Hebenstreit (Paula) and children Jarred and Jeremy, all of Indianapolis, brother Steve Hebenstreit of Bloomington, sister Ann Leithauser (Scott) and children Will, Cate and Caroline of Westerville, Ohio, and girlfriend Vicki Witham of Bloomington.
He was preceded in death by his father William Hebenstreit.
The family would like to invite you to a Celebration of Life gathering in the Hoosier Room of Nick’s English Hut here in Bloomington on Friday, May 20th from 6:00pm to 9:00 pm.
