Obituary for Frederick Lawrence McElroy PhD

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Frederick Lawrence McElroy, Professor Emeritus of Indiana University, on July 11, 2018 in Bloomington, Indiana. Dr. McElroy was born in Louisville, Kentucky on January 16, 1950. The son of Felix McElroy, Jr. and Imogene Watkins McElroy, he was the third child in a family of six children. After graduating from Louisville Male High School in 1968, Dr. McElroy completed his B.A. degree in American Studies from Brown University in 1972. He received the PhD in English and American Studies from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1987, graduating with a 3.92 grade point average. His PhD dissertation is titled:
"Prophets of Universal Redemption: Evangelical Antislavery Literature
From John Woolman to Ottabah Cugoano."
He was appointed Assistant Professor (1987) and he was promoted to Associate Professor
(1993 - Present), and Director of Graduate Studies (1999 - 2002), in the new Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies. Dr. McElroy dedicated his life to the African American Studies Department at Indiana University, and he enjoyed teaching young people.
Dr. McElroy is survived by his wife Galelyn, daughter Ada McElroy - Tally (Joseph) of Cambridge,
Massachusetts, son Frederick Newman Alexander McElroy of Louisville; sisters, Dr. Folasade Oladele (Maryland), Donna McElroy, (Massachusetts); brothers Dr. Felix McElroy III (Nancy)Florida,
and Kirk McElroy (Chandra) Louisville; nieces, Lia Stallworth (Dexter), Dr. Rachel Johnson - Thornton (Zach),
Denesha Jaggers and Demetria Jaggers; nephews Felix McElroy IV (Salana), Michael McElroy
(Susan), and a host of other relatives and friends. A memorial service and celebration of Dr. McElroy's life will be held Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 11 a. m, in the Frangipani Room at Indiana University's Memorial Union, a time of fellowship will follow the service. In loving memory of Dr. McElroy, donations can be made to the online scholarship fund, or to the Dr. Frederick McElroy Scholarship fund at the Indiana University Foundation in Bloomington, Indiana.
