Obituary for George T. Martin

George T. Martin, 89, passed away June 27th, 2017 at Golden Living Center in Bloomington. He was born September 1st, 1927 in Bloomington, to Leila (Chambers) and Fred T. Martin.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Joan M. Martin (Attree), and three children: Karen Carmichael (Robert), Roger Martin (Sue), and Sheri Webb (Eric). He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, his sister, Mary Bryant, brother, John Martin, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
George graduated from Bloomington High School. He was a WWII-era veteran who served in the Occupied Forces, First Division, in Germany. He received the WWII Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. George also served during the Korean War; he received the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars.
After returning from Korea, George briefly worked for the Monon railroad and the IRS before beginning his 34 year career with the US Postal Service, from which he retired in 1988.
George enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a lifelong Cubs fan and also enjoyed IU sports. George was an avid reader of history, particularly the Civil War. He also liked reading about trains and the railroad system. George had a great love of animals; feeding wild birds was a hobby in his later years.
