Hazel J. "Jan" Deckard
Hazel J. "Jan" Deckard 83, of Bloomington, passed from her earthly life on Thursday December 22, 2016 at the Owen Valley Health Campus. She was born August 15, 1933 the youngest of 9 children of Daniel and Goldie (Griffith) Frye.
Jan retired from Otis Elevator after many years of service. She attended First Christian Church in Bloomington and was involved in many activities there including helping with the planning of the 175th Anniversary of the church and Meals on Wheels. She was a proud member and graduate of Bloomington High School class of 1951. She enjoyed working in her flower garden, reading, traveling and sports; especially IU football and basketball. She was an animal lover and dearly loved the many pets she had over the years. Jan was known for hosting lovely dinner parties with great food, lively conversation and sharing laughter with friends.
Jan is survived by her daughters, Kathy Deckard Hankins and Mary Beth Barger (Terry) both of Bloomington, grandchildren, Andrew Benson (Jennifer), Kivan Barger, Kara Hankins Golish (J.T.) and Kyle Hankins, great grandchildren, Ellie Benson, Anna Benson, Kyson Barger, Carter Golish, Hannah Golish, and Noah Golish and several close friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Geneva Polley, Bernice Hennings, Ruth Baugh, Mable Wraight, Mildred Swaffard and Wilma Scott, brothers Paul Frye and Alvin Frye, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Ellen Butler, Laura Lee, Dr. Diane Wells and the staff of Owen Valley Health Campus for the wonderful care they gave Jan during her illness.
Services will be 10:00 am Wednesday December 28, 2016 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. Bloomington.
Visitation will be on Tuesday December 27, 2016 from 5-8 pm at The Funeral Chapel.
Memorial Contributions may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Monroe County Humane Association.
