Obituary for
Rita Gene Bomba (Walther)
Rita Gene Bomba, age 81, of Bloomington, Indiana passed away on June 22, 2016.
Rita was born on January 9, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois to Peter and Angela Walther. She was raised there with her sister, Patricia, and brother, Peter. Rita was a graduate of Loretto Academy, an all-girls Catholic high school on Chicago’s eastside. She met the love of her life, Brad Bomba, during their parochial school days while she was a cheerleader and he was playing football at Mt. Carmel High School several blocks away.
They maintained a long distance relationship throughout college while Rita attended Michigan State University and Brad came to Bloomington to play football at Indiana University. Although she graduated a Spartan, she was a lifelong Hoosier at heart. They were married on July 2, 1960.
Rita leaves behind her best friend and husband of 56 years, Dr. Bradford J. Bomba. She will be deeply missed by her children - Brad Jr. (Angee), Elizabeth, Joseph, Chris (Wendy), Matt (Kelly), Eric (Angie). Her twelve grandchildren - Trey, Tori, Tyce, Madeline, Joey, Lindsey, Cydney, Christopher, James, Mason, Harrison and Aidan will dearly miss all of the love showered upon them by their beautiful Nana. Survivors also include her siblings, Patricia Mason (Michael Sweeney) and Peter Walther (Mary Ellen), nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by infant daughter, Angela; her parents, Peter and Angela Walther; parents-in-law, Joseph and Christine Bomba; and brother-in-law, James Mason.
In addition to being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and treasure to all who knew her – Rita was a talented artist, known for her signature watercolor paintings and portraits. For decades, she painted the portraits of the IU Athletics Hall of Fame members displayed in IU’s Assembly Hall.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday, June 27, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Upon Rita’s request, there will be no visitation.
