Richard Charles Sawyer (Dick)
Richard (Dick) Charles Sawyer, 77, of Bloomington, died on Thursday September 17, 2015 after a lengthy struggle with heart disease. Richard was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Richard was born on August 5, 1938 in Boston, Massachusetts. After graduating from high school, where he was active in an automobile enthusiasts club, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he worked as a jet engine mechanic on B52 bombers and dreamed of being a pilot. After a short term of enlistment he joined the U.S. Army Reserve, in which he excelled, eventually reaching the rank of Command Sergeant Major. As a civilian, he worked as a manager for Sears, Roebuck, & Co. He was an active member of the American Legion Post #18 and VFW #604 in Bloomington. He was an avid train collector, model airplane and boat builder, and boating enthusiast. Richard and wife Betty attended Sherwood Oaks Christian Church in Bloomington. Richard leaves behind his wife of 37 years, Betty Sue (Waterford) Sawyer, daughters Channa (Caldwell) Unkle (Chris), Ronda (Sawyer) Oakes (Billy) and Stacy (Sawyer) Shuler (Shannon) of Georgia; Debera (Hamm) Bragg (Larry) of Shelbyville, Indiana; sons Charles Sawyer (Rhonda) Tim Caldwell of Shelbyville, and Kenny Hamm of Seattle, Washington; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sandra Pike, and his parents Charles and Ruth Sawyer. Visitation will be on Monday September 21, 2015 from 12pm-2pm at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. Bloomington. Services will be 2pm Monday at The Funeral Chapel with Alan Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at CloverHill Cemetery.
