Nila Ellen Lawson
Nila Ellen Lawson, 92, of Bloomington passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Born, January 3, 1923 in Rushville, Indiana, she was the daughter of Donald and Ada (Matthews) Bates. Nila was a secretary in the Radio and Television Department at Indiana University. She was a member of the First United Church for 59 years and a member of the Indiana University Women’s Golf League. Nila was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed playing golf, euchre and pinochle. Survivors include three sons, Don Lawson (Di) of The Villages, FL; Terry Curtis Lawson (Barbara) of Portland, OR; and Gary Lawson (Deborah) of Bloomington, eight grandchildren, Gregg Lawson (Maria), Lee Lawson (Steve Freeh), Ron Elkins (Lisa), Chad Elkins, Amy Lawson (Hemant Keskar), Katherine Lawson (Kelvin Chan), Jessica Lawson and Benjamin Lawson, 12 great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. Nila was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Charles Curtis Lawson, two sisters, Violet Bird and Mildred Stader, two brothers, Merlin and Charles Bates. Visitation will be 6-8pm Friday, September 11, 2015 and 12-1pm Saturday at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. Bloomington, IN 47401. Funeral services will be 1:00pm Saturday at The Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dr. Jack Skiles officiating. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Association.
