Joan McGarry, 91, of Bloomington passed away at her home surrounded by family on Wednesday, August 24, 2016.
Born, October 23, 1924 in Jasonville, Indiana, she was the daughter of Leonard and Freda (Rice) Everly. She was the only daughter with three brothers.
Upon the death of her father, her step-father Earl Lawson became an important part of her life.

She married William Joseph McGarry from Boston, MA in 1945. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Marine Corp after WWII, they settled in Bloomington and started their family.
Joan’s early career was that of loving homemaker. Her second career took her to the Indiana University Office of Admissions, where she worked for 33 years. A loyal fan, Joan enjoyed IU basketball and football.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, husband Bill, and daughters Jill and Jean.
She took great pride in and derived much joy from her family, and is survived by sons William McGarry Jr. (Phyllis) and Phillip McGarry (Susan), daughters Jo Ann Gast and Susan Risk (John), and daughter-in-law Carol McGarry; grandchildren Terri Brosseau, Keith Gast (Melissa), William McGarry III (Kerry), Shane McGarry, Erin McGarry (A.J.), Tom Risk, and Mary Risk, 12 great-grandchildren and one great great-granddaughter.
She was a life-long member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held for family on Monday, August 29, 2016 with Father Thomas Kovatch officiating.
